While student teaching in a 1st grade classroom, I created a thematic unit on agriculture and plants. This unit incorporated reading, math, science and social studies. This is a VERY student friendly unit: it adheres with the universal design of learning and is hands-on. It was planned to include all learners--visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile.

This lesson was planned and facilitated during my service as an AmeriCorps Member. It was a small group, kinesthetic lesson in which students played the part of a "point" on a coordinate plane. It engaged every student in that each had an individual point. These fifth graders reviewed how to plot points and how to find the coordinates of a new ordered pair based on directions given. Also, they were able to be introduced to what their whole group homeroom was learning - plotting polygons on a coordinate plane.

This language arts lesson was planned and facilitated during my student teaching experience in a 3rd through 6th grade learning support classroom. This was designed specifically for a student with an emotional disability. As you will notice, several activities that are hands-on compose this lesson so that the student would stay engaged, focused, and motivated. Below this, you will find the student's behavior contract (themed to satisfy his interests) that we reviewed before his learning session to promote optimal behavior.
